The Person: Michelle Überreste
Michelle Überreste is not your typical local fashion designer. She is known for her bold and unusual aesthetic and imaginative construction. Texture mixing and strong silhouettes define and dominate her work and aesthetic. Interesting fabrics and innovative treatments + techniques are frequented. Michelle has competed on Project Runway: Under The Gunn, appeared on Afterbuzz TV as a host+fashion critic, and her designs have been seen on shows like America's Got Talent, True Blood, She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, Glee, Ink Master, and more. Also in music videos such as Arch Enemy's "Sunset Over The Empire", and in movies including Terrifier. Her designs have been carried by Lip Service, Hot Topic, Nasty Gal, Urban Outfitters, in boutiques worldwide, and more. She has also shown collections at NYFW, LAFW, and FFW. Michelle founded her own namesake brand in 2014. A year later, she was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis, a progressive neurological condition. Fortunately, her husband Forest was able to step in to maintain the label full time and enable her to continue designing. Her motto: Christ first, family second, fashion third.
"I grew up learning to sew at a young age by sewing Barbie doll clothes with my grandmothers. I also helped my mother make outfits for my brother and I, and started creating my own clothes in Highschool, like the backpack pants I sold on Ebay, for instance. I worked as a fashion designer in the industry for 5 years before landing a spot on the Project Runway spinoff Under the Gunn. Immediately after the show I knew that I wanted to start working independently and offer my own designs to the public."
